BIOGRAPHY

The Italian Saxophone Orchestra
was formed in 1985, bringing together young Italian saxophonists specialized in classical, avant-garde and jazz. The orchestra includes 1 sopranino saxophone, 2 sopranos, 3 altos, 3 tenors, 2 baritones and 1 bass. Their interpretations of contemporary music have received special recognition and this is an area of the repertoire, that the Ensemble has continued to promote in their concert activities.
Alongside their performances in the major concert halls throughout Italy, the I.S.O. under the direction of Federico Mondelci have frequently broadcast on Radio and recorded a  CD, including works especially written for that ensemble by Italian composers, on the Edipan label devoted to contemporary music.
The ensemble believes that close collaboration with composers is vital to the process of interpreting modern music and therefore attempts to work with every composer it plays.
Further projects includes a new recording for the American label DELOS with works of G.Fitkin, R.Molinelli, P.Marzocchi, P.Glass, S.Reich and G.Ligeti.

REVIEWS

FANFARE January February 2001
Federico Mondelci’s work is outstanding in its subtlety, beauty of tone production, and idiomatic ease. One quickly  becomes aware not merely of an instrument purporting to be a human voice but of all emotions that voice conveys.
William Zagorski

NEW YORK TIMES New York August 18, 1999
(CD of the month)
Mondelci brings a rich, jazzy appeal to Piazzollas hauntingly beautiful melodies; he seems to have a real feel for the music's power and gutsiness, as well as its gentle tenderness.
